Rape Statistics Worldwide

दुनिया भर में बलात्कार के दर्ज मामलों के आंकड़े

What can be compared across countries? The most widely available measure is police-recorded rape cases per 100,000 people, shown with each country’s data year. It measures reporting and recording as well as violence.

Rape statistics by country

देश के अनुसार दर्ज बलात्कार दर

Reported rape cases per 100,000 population, with each source year shown. These are police-recorded rates, not estimates of true prevalence.

Which country has the highest reported rape rate?

In this selected comparison, England & Wales has the highest displayed rate at 117.3 reported cases per 100,000. This does not prove that rape is most prevalent there.

Do not use this as a safety ranking. Country figures are not directly comparable. Legal definitions, police recording rules, whether repeated incidents are counted separately, access to reporting, and victims’ willingness or ability to report vary enormously. Higher reported rates can reflect broader definitions and stronger reporting systems; very low rates can reflect underreporting and stigma. UNODC cautions against naive international comparisons.

Lowest does not mean safest. Very low reported rates usually reflect underreporting, stigma, barriers to police access and narrow legal definitions—not an absence of sexual violence. High reported rates often reflect broader definitions and better reporting and recording systems.

Selected published justice-stage outcomes. Each bar states its own denominator because countries do not measure this consistently.

How many rapists are convicted? (by country)

These bars are not strictly comparable. India’s 24.4% is convictions among trials completed, South Africa’s figure is a published estimate of perpetrators convicted, the US figure starts from an estimated 1,000 sexual assaults, and England & Wales measures charges or summonses from police-recorded rapes. At every stage—reporting, charge, trial and conviction—large numbers of cases leave the justice process.

MALE VICTIMS

Male victimization is rarely captured consistently. Survey estimates reveal harm that police-recorded rape statistics—especially India’s—often cannot show.

Not separately counted

India · official rape statistics

NCRB does not publish a separate count of male rape victims. Under India’s IPC and BNS rape provisions, the victim is defined as a woman, leaving male victimization invisible in official rape data.

NCRB · IPC / BNS legal definition

Severe underreporting: one estimate suggests only around 5% of male victims ever report. Stigma, shame and fear of disbelief mean these survey-based figures should be treated as conservative—not as the full scale of victimization. The US lifetime figure and UK past-year figure use different time periods and should not be directly compared.

Survey estimates, not police totals. Most countries do not record a victim’s sexual orientation or gender identity in crime statistics. These figures come from surveys and may still understate the true scale because disclosure and sampling barriers remain.

Global rape statistics and India data: FAQ

दुनिया और भारत के आंकड़ों पर अक्सर पूछे जाने वाले सवाल

Short answers about reported country rates, international comparability and India’s NCRB figures.

How many rapes happen daily in India?

NCRB registered 29,536 rape cases in 2024, equal to about 80.7 cases per day—roughly 81.

How many rape cases were registered in India in 2024?

Police registered 29,536 rape cases across India in 2024.

Which Indian state had the most rape cases in 2024?

Rajasthan had the highest absolute count among States and UTs shown, with 4,871 registered cases.

What is India’s reported rape rate per 100,000?

International compilations place India at approximately 1.8–2.2 reported cases per 100,000, depending on the year and source.

What is the reported rape rate in the United States?

UNODC-based compilations put the United States at approximately 38–41 reported cases per 100,000 population.

What is the rape conviction rate in India?

The 2024 conviction rate was 24.4% among rape trials completed during the year.

What percentage of offenders were known to the victim?

NCRB data for 2023 reported that 97.5% of accused persons were known to the victim.

Are rape statistics in India underreported?

Yes, recorded statistics cover only cases reported to and registered by police. Stigma, fear, social pressure and access barriers mean the actual number is likely higher.

Is there a reliable worldwide total of rape cases?

No. Countries use different definitions and reporting systems, many cases are never reported, and not every country supplies comparable data.

Why do reported rates look high in the UK and Sweden?

Broader legal definitions, separate counting of repeated incidents, stronger reporting access and more complete police recording can all raise the reported rate.

Why does India’s reported rape rate look low?

A low police-recorded rate does not establish low prevalence. Underreporting, stigma, access barriers, legal definitions and recording practices all influence the number.

What is the difference between rape and sexual assault statistics?

“Sexual assault” is generally a broader statistical category that can include rape and other non-consensual sexual contact. Definitions vary by country and agency, so the figures should not be mixed without checking scope.

Where can I find sexual assault statistics for the USA?

US sources include the FBI’s police-recorded crime data and the Bureau of Justice Statistics victimization surveys. RAINN explains these sources and reports that only about 310 of every 1,000 sexual assaults are reported to police.

Can sexual assault statistics be compared by country?

Not directly. Canada, Australia, the United States and other countries publish broader sexual-assault measures that do not match the UNODC rape-rate definition used in the country table.

Which country has the highest reported rape rate?

In the displayed UNODC-based selection, England & Wales has the highest rate at 117.3 reported cases per 100,000 (2022). This is not a prevalence or safety ranking.

Which country has the lowest reported rape rate?

Saudi Arabia has the lowest figure in this selected 30-country view at approximately 0.1 reported cases per 100,000; the compilation does not state the source year. Such a low rate can reflect underreporting, legal definitions and recording barriers—not safety.

What is the rape conviction rate in the USA?

RAINN’s US justice-stage synthesis says 28 of every 1,000 sexual assaults lead to a felony conviction—2.8%. This starts from estimated sexual assaults, not only police reports.

What is the rape conviction rate in England and Wales?

The cited 2020 Home Office figures show 843 charges or summonses from 52,210 recorded rapes, or 1.6%. This is a charge rate, not a conviction rate.

Can rape conviction rates be compared by country?

Not strictly. Published percentages use different starting points, including all assaults, police-recorded cases, charges and completed trials. Each figure must be read with its denominator.

तरीका और स्रोत

The page is a fixed statistical snapshot. It makes no network request for data when opened.

Sexual assault statistics by country: why terminology matters

  1. Rape vs sexual assault: terminology. The United States (FBI and victimization surveys), Canada (Statistics Canada) and Australia (ABS) also publish “sexual assault” statistics, a broader category than rape. Because definitions differ, the country table uses UNODC-based police-recorded rape rates per 100,000 as its consistent displayed metric.
  2. India figures come from NCRB’s Crime in India annual reports. 2024 is the latest available year in this snapshot.
  3. Daily, hourly and “one every 17.8 minutes” figures are simple averages: 29,536 divided across the 366 days of leap year 2024.
  4. The “so far today” counter applies that average evenly from the viewer’s local midnight. It is a mathematical estimate, not an incident tracker.
  5. Figures cover registered cases under rape provisions. POCSO cases are reported as a separate category.
  6. International rates are reported police-recorded rates per 100,000, drawn from UNODC-based compilations with differing latest years. They are not prevalence estimates.
